My Take on 'My First Love': A Disappointing Korean Drama

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm a big fan of Korean dramas, but 'My First Love' left me feeling underwhelmed. The show's visuals were a highlight, with great cinematography and production quality. However, the 2-season, 8-episode format felt off, and the story didn't quite live up to my expectations. I was expecting a more engaging narrative, but it felt like the show was missing something. With an IMDB rating of 7.3, it's clear that others enjoyed it, but for me, it was a total letdown. If you're a fan of Korean dramas, you might want to give it a try, but I wouldn't go in with high hopes. I'm always on the lookout for new shows to watch, and 'My First Love' had some promising elements, but ultimately, it didn't deliver.

Hello there!
I'm a fan of Korean dramas, and today I'm sharing my honest thoughts on 'My First Love'. I've got mixed feelings about this one.
What I liked about 'My First Love'
First off, the visuals are pretty good. The cinematography is top-notch, and the production quality is high.
I was a bit confused by the 2-season, 8-episode format, though. It felt more like a standard 16-episode Korean drama. I mean, I've seen other shows with similar formats, but it didn't quite work for me in this case.
The show was produced by Netflix, which is always a plus in my book. I love how they're pushing the boundaries of storytelling.
The IMDB rating is 7.3, based on over 1,700 user reviews. That's not bad, but for me, it's not enough to make up for the show's shortcomings.
The drama premiered in 2019, which is relatively recent. I'm always excited to see new Korean dramas come out.
It's a South Korean production, and I love how they're telling their own stories.
What I didn't like about 'My First Love'
Unfortunately, the storyline is pretty weak. I mean, it's a common theme in Korean dramas - the first love story of a wealthy guy who takes in a friend, a runaway, and another girl from a wealthy family. The characters are all pretty one-dimensional, and the plot is predictable. I've seen better storytelling in other shows.
The acting isn't great either. I've seen better performances from the leads in other dramas. Chun Chae-yeon, the lead actress, was particularly underwhelming. She's shown her range in other dramas, like 'Family by Choice', but in 'My First Love', she's just not convincing.
Choi Su-hang, the male lead, is also not impressive. His character is weak and uninteresting. I didn't really care about what happened to him.
Chun Jin-yeong, the guy who plays the first love interest, is just a rich kid with a lot of time on his hands. He's always dressed to the nines, and his character is just not relatable.
Choi Ri, the girl who moves in with the main character, is another character with a lot of money and a bad attitude. Her wealthy family is searching for her throughout the drama, but they're not very effective.
Kan Tae, the guy who moves in with the main character, is just over-the-top with his acting. He's either too good or too bad, and it's hard to tell which.
Overall, it's a decent drama, but there are better ones out there. If you're a fan of Korean dramas, you might want to check it out, but don't expect too much.
