I've been a fan of the 2008 movie Strangers for a long time, and I first watched it at least ten years ago, when the horror it evoked wasn't as deeply ingrained in me as it is now. I decided to rewatch it only because of Liv Tyler, who captivated me in the film The Illusion of Beauty, and a few years ago in "The Lord of the Rings".

Frankly, the rewatch held up only because of Liv, because otherwise I would have turned off the movie - the plot is extremely brutal and terrifying.

Despite the annotation stating that the film is based on real events, in reality it's based on them only partially: the director was inspired by crime chronicles, specifically the stories of the Manson family murders.
The plot Brian Bertino came up with was inspired by the murder of actress Sharon Tate, who along with her friends was brutally killed by the Manson family on August 9, 1969.

I've seen this trope play out in a lot of movies - a group of characters gets stranded in a remote house with no way out, only to be stalked by a psycho (Left Behind, The Cabin in the Woods, etc.).
That's exactly what happens to the main characters in Strangers.
On the evening of February 11, 2005, Kristen McKay and James Hoyt return to the family's summer home after a friend's wedding. The brutal murder that took place in this house remains unsolved.
As James, the protagonist, says,
There's plenty of crazy people out there.
Who kill for the sake of killing...
The director adds a romantic subplot to the story, which is meant to make the audience empathize with the characters and feel their pain.
It's terrifying to be home alone, especially when someone starts banging on the door in the middle of the night, wearing a mask. But the characters are so caught up in their own drama that they fail to notice the stranger at their door.

I've always been struck by how trusting people are when it comes to living in houses with no security, no protection - walls and doors that are easy to break into.
Looking back on the gadgets of 2008, you can see why the characters in this story found themselves in a tight spot. And yet, the heroes' actions are often irrational.
I haven't heard a dog barking or a car driving by since we've been here... nothing. Just us and them.

Despite the heroes' irrational behavior, the film keeps you on the edge of your seat and genuinely scares you. The masked maniacs in this movie are an extra nightmare for coulrophobes.
-Why are you torturing us?
-Because you were home.
I loved the cinematography: the camera movement feels like a living, breathing thing, like you're peeking through a window.
The number of characters is kept to a minimum: not every film can pull this off, but The Strangers does, thanks to the cast, particularly Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman. Liv perfectly conveyed all the emotions: from a deep sadness to a genuine fear and a desperate, panicked terror.

The horror elements are more like jump scares and creepy sound effects, but overall this is a drama-thriller. The atmosphere is both eerie and unsettling, making for a thrilling watch. What's truly chilling is the calmness of those who kill for the sake of it, because they enjoy it. As the saying goes, the devil can hide in silence.
Masks are a tool for intimidation and a metaphor for the fact that people aren't always what they seem. But, as James said, don't overthink it, or you'll start to feel a creeping sense of paranoia.

I have to say, when the story comes together seamlessly, you can't help but pay attention to the little things. The decor in the Hoyt house was a standout for me - the record player, the wood paneling, the fireplace...
But I thought the ending was left a bit open, which is actually kind of refreshing. It leaves you to fill in the blanks and imagine what happened next.
Overall, if you're in the right mood, Strangers is a solid choice for a one-time watch. The film's charm lies in its slow burn and gradual build-up.
I'd definitely recommend it.
