A Gripping but Flawed Mini-Series: 'Little Disasters' Review

Check out this new release from the Brits, "Little Disasters" (2025), a drama-thriller that had me hooked from the get-go!

First off, let's talk about the visuals: stunning, stylish, and atmospheric.

Then there's the lead role, played by none other than Diana Kruger (I've been a fan since she played Helen in Troy back in 2004).

Let's just say I was thoroughly impressed with her performance in this series. She plays the perfect mum to three kids, with a picture-perfect home and life.

But when her husband stumbles upon something off about their 10-month-old daughter, who's consistently crying and lethargic, the whole world turns upside down. Jess rushes to the hospital, where her ex-best friend, who she's had a falling out with, is the one performing the examination...

The tension in the hospital is palpable, and the mystery surrounding the baby's serious head injury - a broken skull - is just the tip of the iceberg.

According to Jess, the baby simply slipped and fell, but the doctor is skeptical...

This is a tough pill for Jess to swallow: 10 years of friendship down the drain with a single phone call...

☑️ First Impression.

The intrigue in the first episode was top-notch! What happened to the little one? Who's behind the injuries? And what's going on with Jess's over-the-top parenting?

The show really ramps up the mystery after introducing the other moms and their lives. You get to see the different social dynamics at play, but what ties them all together is that they're all mothers. And let's be real, Jess is considered the gold standard for moms. But then, everything goes off the rails. And you'll have to wait until the end of the sixth and final episode to find out what happened. Until then, you'll be right there with the police and social worker trying to piece together the truth, all while the other moms try to help Jess in their own way - and in the process, they inadvertently uncover some secrets of their own. To be honest, I was hooked until around episode four. After that, I started to feel a bit frustrated with all the unanswered questions and vague statements about motherhood. "They say that when you become a mother, you lose your identity, but motherhood shouldn't consume you completely."

But when I finally found out what happened to the little girl, I realized that "Little Catastrophes" is the kind of show where you can just watch the first and last episode and still get the gist of it - without wasting too much of your time!

I have to give this mini-series three stars, and I'm being generous. It's just been polished to perfection, and I mean that in a bad way. Every detail, every emotion, every character was in its place, creating a tense atmosphere that didn't quite live up to the hype. Bottom line: I'd recommend this mini-series to all the moms out there - it's got some thought-provoking moments and things to take away for yourself. For me, I took away that there's no such thing as a perfect mom and that it's awesome we didn't cast Nicole Kidman as the lead role again. Seriously, this mini-series gets four stars with a huge minus. It's worth watching, but only if you want to forget it soon after. I think the same story would've been more engaging on the big screen... stretching out the 'small catastrophes' over six episodes with 47-minute-long installments just didn't make sense.
