A Kitchen Design Disaster: What Not to Expect from Leroy Merlin

summarizeEditor's Summary

I was really looking forward to trying out Leroy Merlin's free kitchen design consultation, but what I got was a series of frustrating mistakes and missteps. The experience started off promising, with a helpful designer who took the time to understand my tiny kitchen's unique challenges. However, things quickly took a turn for the worse. The mini gas hob they suggested had only two burners, which wouldn't cut it for my cooking needs. And to make matters worse, there was no power outlet for the oven, requiring an extra trip to the store and a costly electrical installation. Needless to say, I was left feeling disappointed and frustrated with the entire experience. If you're considering using Leroy Merlin's kitchen design service, be prepared for a potentially lengthy and frustrating process, especially when it comes to the booking process and the online design process.

A Kitchen Design Disaster: What Not to Expect from Leroy Merlin
I was really looking forward to trying out Leroy Merlin's free kitchen design consultation, but what I got was a series of frustrating mistakes and missteps that left me regretting my decision.
It all started with the booking process, which required me to travel two hours to the nearest consultation location. At first, I was skeptical, but the experience turned out to be a useful one.
The designer took one look at my tiny kitchen and declared it too small to work with, but I was determined to make it work. We drew up a plan and brainstormed ideas, but things quickly took a turn for the worse.
First, I realized that the mini gas hob they'd suggested would only have two burners, which wouldn't be enough for my cooking needs. Then, I discovered that there was no power outlet for the oven, which meant I'd have to get an electrician to install a new circuit.
The online design process just didn't click with me, and I had to go through the website again and make another trip to the store. The designer redrew the entire plan, but it still had major flaws.
One of the biggest issues was the placement of the oven and fridge. The designer had suggested closing off the gas pipe and attaching a flexible hose to it, but that's not safe – it's a fire hazard. And to make matters worse, the fridge was propping up the gas pipe, which would cause it to get hot.
I tried to fix the design myself, but it was a nightmare. The drawers were stuck, the trim looked terrible, and the outlets weren't even drawn. I ended up having to order a new assembly and deal with a prolonged installation process.
Looking back, I wish I'd never dealt with Leroy Merlin's design service. There's just not much value in it, and calculating the materials correctly is clearly not their strong suit. I'm already tired of dealing with them, from the design process to shipping to assembly.
Frankly, I don't want to use their services again. Maybe they're okay for bigger projects, but it wasn't a great experience for me.
I appreciate you taking the time to read my review, but I'm not sure it'll be helpful for you.
The total cost of the kitchen design and assembly was around 200,000 rubles, excluding the gas stove and battery relocation. I also had to remove some fancy and expensive features to make it more reasonable.
Now, let's talk about the physics and logic of assembly. The drawers were a major issue – they looked good at first, but when you opened them, the handle was stuck and you couldn't adjust it. Our middle drawer still won't open fully.
The design team didn't take into account the height of the countertop and the length, which is why the trim looks terrible. And to make matters worse, the outlets weren't even drawn.
I ended up having to order a new assembly and deal with a prolonged installation process. It's been a real headache, and I'm just glad I can return the excess and buy what I need.
It's not kitchen design – it's just me placing pre-made blocks and doing it however I can. And don't even get me started on the assembly I ordered. There's a mistake after mistake.
I've attached some photos of the design and assembly process. It's a bit of a mess, but I hope it'll give you an idea of what to expect from Leroy Merlin's design service.
Here are a few of the designs we came up with:
Kitchen design at Leroy MerlinKitchen design at Leroy MerlinAfter a bit of deliberation, we decided to go with a design that incorporated a mini gas hob and a decent-sized work surface. It wasn't perfect, but it was a good starting point.
Here's the final design we came up with:
Kitchen Design at Leroy MerlinIt's not the most beautiful design, but it's better than what we have now, and it fits my budget and square footage. I ordered the assembly from Leroy Merlin as well.
It all cost me around 200,000 rubles without the gas stove and excluding the battery relocation. I also reviewed the initial kitchen plan, removed the fancy and expensive stuff, and made it more reasonable. They initially overestimated the best option.
Now, let's talk about the physics and logic of assembly. I'll start with something funny. So, the drawers:
Looks good, right? But what happens when you open the drawer?
Kitchen Design at Leroy MerlinYou can't open it. Literally. The handle is stuck, and I couldn't even adjust it. Our middle drawer won't open fully. It's like a matchstick and a hammer. I'll be looking for a similar handle now, but one that's flatter.
Okay, let's move on. The design team didn't take into account the height of the countertop and the length, which is why the trim looks like this:
Kitchen design at Leroy MerlinYeah, I ordered it to be closed, but no big deal. Thanks for the extra couple of days to assemble the kitchen to perfection. By the way, since we're in this corner of the kitchen, let's talk about the outlets. The ones in the program aren't even drawn:
Kitchen design at Leroy MerlinWhy do I have these cables pulled out like that? It's because of the boxes. If I make one hole for all the cables right under the outlet, the box won't close physically. So, I'll need more plugs than planned.
Total.
Kitchen Design at Leroy MerlinIt would be a shame if we stopped at the first design they showed me. I can imagine assembling the kitchen, connecting everything, and then realizing that the fridge needs to be moved a significant distance from the gas pipe. Because, let's be real, we want to live more than just have a pretty picture. And we'd still need to drill a hole in the countertop for the flexible wiring.
Honestly, I regret ordering the kitchen from them. There's not much value in the design service. They just slap together whatever they can, and calculating the materials correctly is not their strong suit. Luckily, I can return the excess and buy what I need. But the installation process is significantly prolonged because of this.
In reality, it's not kitchen design – it's just me placing pre-made blocks and doing it however I can. And don't even get me started on the assembly I ordered. There's a mistake after mistake.
Frankly, I don't want to use services from these designers again. I'm already tired of dealing with them, from the design process to shipping to assembly. Maybe they're okay for bigger projects, but it wasn't a great experience for me.
I appreciate you taking the time to read my review! It's unlikely to be helpful for you, though.
