Kitten Series Review: A Mixed Bag

A Decent but Unremarkable Addition to the Kitten Series

I recently watched another cartoon about kittens, but it didn't blow me away. I was expecting something new and exciting, but this one felt like more of the same.

I love the short story format, and I often find myself rewatching episodes just for fun. But this one didn't quite hit the mark. It was a bit like watching that other cartoon about the sea – I knew what to expect, and I wasn't surprised by anything.

My kid, on the other hand, would probably love it. We've been rewatching the kitten series for what feels like the hundredth time now, and we've even started reading the books. I've even bought some storybooks that are basically just retellings of the same series.

Anyway, we headed off to grandma's place for New Year's, and that's where the adventure begins. We wanted to make it a special holiday, but things didn't quite go as planned.

The beginning felt familiar – it was like I'd already been on a similar trip. We were sailing somewhere, and then we were skiing, but the scenery was a bit different. Still, I couldn't shake the feeling of déjà vu until we met grandma. She was passionate about her work and kept getting distracted, jotting down notes and inventing new things. And let me tell you, it wasn't all for nothing...

Watching the kittens dig up the backyard reminded me of the time they helped the archaeologists and Caramel, as always, lectured them on not giving up. Honestly, this character can be a bit annoying at times – either because she comes across as a know-it-all or because she's a bit of a nag. But when my kid says 'I know what to do,' it gives me a bit of an uneasy feeling.

The kittens have found themselves a new friend, but things aren't as simple as they seem. He needs to be taught a thing or two, and then rescued. Still, he's a quick learner and picks up information easily. Before long, he'll be giving Caramel a run for her money...

The storyline is pretty straightforward – just help the good guy and punish the bad one. And the bad guy? He's a total self-absorbed blogger, only looking out for himself and counting his money. I think it's a decent story for kids who are already obsessed with becoming influencers and calculating their future profits. I remember when my kid was in preschool, they'd record videos of the kids talking about their future dreams. And yeah, a lot of them wanted to be content creators. But you know what? Some of them still wanted to be astronauts and firefighters!

But in this story, the blogger is like the embodiment of evil, with all these negative traits. And of course, nobody's thinking about supporting him or understanding where he's coming from. He's even drawn in a pretty weird way, with this awful purple color and an awkward design. Not exactly the cute little ball of fluff you'd expect from a cartoon character.

The animation is completely unremarkable – it's the same style we've seen in all the other series in this family, just in a different format. Yeah, it's not too long, just over an hour. That's enough to keep me engaged, but not so long that I start to get bored and zone out, remembering the shorter episodes with a hint of sadness.

The new character is a sweetheart, always making me laugh with his silly antics. We even used some of his catchphrases as jokes for a while after. There's a moral to the story, but it's not all boring – it's well-paced and has some intense moments, like a high-speed chase that had me on the edge of my seat, thinking the worst was going to happen. For a kids' show, it's a great way to keep things exciting without getting too complicated.

I don't even remember if they sang anything in the background – usually, there are some cute little songs that stick with you. I think that was the case here too. My kid was totally into it, and I have to say, it's a decent change of pace for die-hard fans.

I caught a glimpse that there's a new full-length movie too. Apparently, this one about summer adventures is way more exciting by comparison to the time-travel adventure movie, which I read is actually the worst one and was only made as a token effort.

When my kid keeps asking to watch the same episode over and over, I do sneak a peek. The 'picnic with milk and almonds' episode is getting a bit old, and I wish they'd show something new. We actually have a book about this series that we can read together.

Overall, it's a decent addition to the series, but it's not going to blow anyone away. If you're a die-hard fan, you'll probably enjoy it, but if you're looking for something new and exciting, you might want to look elsewhere.

One thing that did stand out to me was the new character's design. He's a bit of an oddball, but in a good way. He's got a lot of personality, and his antics had me laughing out loud. I also appreciated the moral of the story, which is an important one for kids to learn.

However, I did find the storyline to be a bit predictable. I knew what was going to happen from the start, and it didn't take long for me to figure out who the bad guy was. But hey, that's not necessarily a bad thing – it's a kids' show, after all, and predictability can be a good thing when it comes to keeping young viewers engaged.

One thing that I wish they had done differently was to make the bad guy a bit more complex. He's just a one-dimensional villain, and it would have been nice to see some depth to his character. But overall, I think the show does a good job of teaching kids about the importance of kindness and empathy.

As a parent, it's great to see my kid learning and growing from the shows we watch together. And while this one may not be the most exciting addition to the series, it's still a fun and engaging watch that's perfect for kids.

So if you're looking for a new show to watch with your kids, I'd definitely recommend checking this one out. Just don't expect it to be a game-changer – it's a solid, if unremarkable, addition to the series.
