Kaliningrad Regional Drama Theater: A Mixed Bag

summarizeEditor's Summary

I've got a confession to make - I'm a total theater junkie. I always try to catch a show whenever I'm traveling to a new place. So, when I found myself in Kaliningrad, I snagged a ticket to the Kaliningrad Regional Drama Theater to see 'Pyjama for Six'. The play itself was a comedy, and I have to say, it was a good choice - we'd never seen it before. The theater itself, however, left me a bit underwhelmed.

Hello everyone, and welcome to my review! I've got a bit of a weird habit - I love visiting the theater in every new place I travel to, if possible. I managed to do it in Vladikavkaz, St. Petersburg, Pyatigorsk, and Sukhumi. Unfortunately, it didn't work out in Dagestan.
So, here I am in Kaliningrad. I managed to get a ticket to the Kaliningrad Regional Drama Theater to see the play 'Pyjama for Six'. It's a comedy, and we'd never seen it before, which was a good thing.
And here we are at the theater. It's located in the center, right next to a square with a monument to playwright Schiller. The old building has columns, posters, and a list of events for April (we were there in mid-April).
Even the first floor with its shining tile floor looks pretty and dignified.
We climb up the solid stairs with white railings to get to the higher floors.
We end up in a spacious foyer with a parquet floor. It's like a ballroom!
There are photos of scenes from plays on the walls.
There's also a fancy white piano in the foyer. You can use the Pushkin card for school kids and students to visit the theater. And here's a slogan in the spirit of Soviet times encouraging you to use it.
The theater hall has glass cabinets - vitrines with costumes from different plays.
Okay, so the costume collection is pretty cool.
I have to say, the theater itself looks like something out of a classic movie. You know, like those old films from the early 20th century - the parter for the dignified crowd, the balconies for the students, the loges for the VIPs, and the upper balcony for those who are a little more... adventurous.
And of course, the chandeliers are stunning.
"The theater is full, the loges are shining, the parter and the seats are buzzing", as Pushkin would say.
But... there's always a "but". And in this case, it's that the theater itself is impressive, but the show we saw was a total letdown. I'm not even kidding, we had to think really hard to remember what we saw this year. It was a comedy of errors, and unfortunately, it wasn't our cup of tea. I had a similar experience with "The Misanthrope" at the Komissarzhevskaya Theater. But, on the other hand, I loved some of the other shows I saw. Maybe we just need to try again? Next time, maybe we'll stick to the classics.
So, dear readers, I'd recommend checking out the theater, but maybe choose a different show. Maybe something a little more... timeless?
