Making Homeschooling Work for My Daughter

summarizeEditor's Summary

I was skeptical about homeschooling at first, but after a year of struggling with my daughter's health issues and online schoolwork, I decided to give it a try. We've been homeschooling for a few months now, and I'm blown away by the results. The program is well-structured, the instructor is top-notch, and the website is user-friendly. My daughter's grades have improved significantly, and she's actually enjoying learning. I'm so glad I made the switch – it's been a total game changer for our family. We've been able to create a more flexible and relaxed learning environment that works for both of us, and I've been able to see my daughter's confidence and self-esteem soar. She's making progress in her studies, and we're able to take breaks and pursue our interests whenever we want. I've also been able to spend more quality time with my daughter, which has been amazing.

I was blown away by how quickly and easily I could tackle the learning issues my daughter had been struggling with for so long.
Hi, my name is Ludmila, and I've been working remotely from home for the past three years. I have a 13-year-old daughter, and about a year ago, she started having health issues. They were just your average colds, but she began missing school frequently. We'd try to do her online schoolwork, but we'd often skip the actual lessons.
When she was in school, she'd come home with a ton of questions, and I'd have to sit with her and help her find the answers online.
It was getting to the point where school was taking up a lot of our time, and then we'd spend even more time doing her homework. It was really stressing both of us out.
Home schooling
In February of this year, I just got fed up and decided to give home schooling a try. I wanted to make sure my daughter could keep up with her schoolwork even when she was out sick.
Since then, we've moved to Kemerovo, and it's a big city, so we've been going through a thorough evaluation to figure out what's going on with my daughter. And of course, that means even more absences from school.
It was tough to decide, to be honest, because it's a lot of responsibility just on me. I talked to my older kids, and they were all for it. Honestly, they said it would be a lot easier for their sister to learn this way.
I called the education department, and they told me that if I choose home schooling, I'd have to write a statement to them, do the teaching myself, and then submit her final exams to the school.
I didn't want to take on that extra responsibility, to be honest. Someone's got to be bringing in a paycheck, you know? My daughter and I live together.
The second option was distance learning with a school affiliation. That's what we're looking at. It's pretty standard, really. The kid attends classes remotely, follows a schedule, participates in webinars, does her homework, and submits her final exams. And she's still affiliated with the regular school.
Foxyard - Online School Website How I Ended Up at Foxyard
So, I was basically there. I was studying online at university and taking chemistry and advanced math classes. Foxyard was the only school that came up in my search.
I looked around at a few other options, called them up, and got different quotes. For instance, one place was cheaper, but they didn't provide textbooks - you had to order them from the library and wait for them to arrive by mail, then send them back.
Then there was the price - it varied. As of 2025, the cost of tuition ranges from 7,800 to 24,000 rubles. I was only considering one option: online lessons in a standard format with a school attachment.
Document Agreement
They were supposed to attach us to a school in Moscow. Here's how it all went down:
I paid the tuition for the month first. Then I sent over my attendance record with grades and emailed it to the new school. They gave me a confirmation letter saying they'd accept us.I picked up my personal file from our local school.I sent over the photos again to the new school. After they gave me the green light, I sent my personal file and copies of the requested documents by mail. Finally, they attached us. That was the last step.Foxyard.ru - Online School Website Lessons
Now, let me tell you how my daughter's been doing in school. She's got a schedule with the lesson times listed, and during that time, she joins the live webinar. The teacher is live, explaining the topic. You can't speak up in class, which I think is actually a good thing.
Foxyard.ru - Сайт Онлайн-школа ФоксфордI've got a house full of kids, and if I let them ask questions, it'll never end. Luckily, the chat feature is always available. The teacher reads and responds to their queries. My daughter's already asked about algebra, and she got an instant answer.
During the live webinars, the kids complete assignments, answer questions, and solve problems that pop up on the screen. After the lesson, you can see how many questions they got right. Plus, there are additional tasks to complete after the lesson.
Foxyard.ru - Сайт Онлайн-школа ФоксфордMiss a lesson? No problem. You don't have to report anything to anyone. Just catch up on the recording and complete the assignment.
Foxyard.ru - Сайт Онлайн-школа ФоксфордThe platform also keeps you updated on what needs to be done today and which tests haven't been completed. I can even check my kid's progress from my own parent account.
Foxyard.ru - Сайт Онлайн-школа ФоксфордNo textbooks needed here. All the important info is attached to each lesson. That's a huge plus for me, as textbooks are always taking up space and weighing down my kid's backpack.
Cost
I opted for live webinars, which can be viewed later if needed. My daughter also has access to the school's resources.
The monthly fee is 10,226 rubles. I'll be taking a break during the summer months.
Foxyard.ru - Сайт Онлайн-школа ФоксфордI've got to say, the referral program here is pretty cool. I haven't managed to get anyone to sign up yet, but I'm planning to use it soon.
If someone follows my link and we both get a bonus, we can use those to pay for the course. That's a pretty sweet deal, if you ask me.
Foxyard.ru - Сайт Онлайн-школа ФоксфордCustomer Support
I have to admit, I was a bit nervous about this at first. When I had questions, I had to write an email and wait for a response.
Now that I'm used to it, it's not so bad. They usually respond within 10-30 minutes, which is great.
Even though everything is explained on the platform's pages, it's still a bit confusing at the beginning. I've had to call them a few times, and they've been really helpful in explaining things to me.
Parent Meetings and Other Features
I've watched a few recorded parent meetings, and it's really reassuring to see that I'm not the only one with these concerns. Lots of other parents are going through the same thing.
You can also find friends here, and my daughter has left an application, but we're still figuring out how it all works. It's definitely worth checking out, but everyone has to decide for themselves. In our case, it's been a great choice. My daughter is learning at her own pace, and if she doesn't understand something, she can ask or review the lesson again.
But, of course, there are some downsides. The customer support can be a bit tricky to deal with, especially at the beginning. You have to write emails and wait for responses, and it can be frustrating when you don't get the answers you need right away.
I've found that it's not always clear, and I've had to ask for clarification multiple times. The responses aren't always immediate, which can be frustrating. It feels like I'm hitting a brick wall sometimes, and it's like they just don't care. It's like I'm on my own with the computer and my problems.
Distant learning isn't as easy as it seems. I'd recommend it, but don't expect it to be a breeze.
September 5 (update)
After finishing the seventh grade and moving on to the eighth, I've had a chance to make some observations. My daughter has actually become more engaged in the learning process, and she's doing better in school. She even says that she prefers this format because if she doesn't understand something, she can go back to the video, pause it, and review it again.
One of the downsides for us was the language barrier. Last year, the teacher spoke mostly in English during lessons, which was tough even for me to follow. The teachers would ask the kids to speak in the chat, but the teacher wouldn't respond in English. This year, we've had a different teacher, and that's been a positive change. In a traditional school setting, it's not always as straightforward as it is here.
Foxyard.ru - Сайт Онлайн-школа ФоксфордNow, our teacher speaks in English first and then translates into Russian, which makes it much easier to understand. It's a big improvement.
Another change we've made is switching to a flipped classroom. I've rearranged the learning schedule for some subjects that were giving my daughter trouble. Now, the theory is separate, and the lessons are pre-recorded. We can review them at any time. For example, our physics teacher has pre-recorded lessons that we can access whenever we need to.
Foxyard.ru - Online School F oxfordI have to say, the follow-up consultations after watching the theory sessions were a game-changer. They really helped solidify the concepts. The presenter even had a slideshow to go along with the theory, which made it so much easier for my daughter to understand. She could just open the presentation, take notes, and then listen to the lesson. It was really effective.
At first, I was struggling to grasp the flipped classroom concept. But when I reached out to the support team, they explained it in a way that made total sense. And, I have to give a shoutout to the parents in the chat - they were super helpful in explaining it to me too!
That's the latest update from our end. I'll be adding more to this review as I go along.
