Grandorf Fresh Adult Mini Turkey Dog Food for Small Breeds

My little pup's a small breed, and I wanted a food that's both tasty and good for them. That's why I made the switch to Grandorf Fresh Adult Mini - it's got fresh turkey as the top ingredient, and it's grain-free. The unique formula gives them a balanced diet they love, and it's easy on their tummies, which is a big win for me. I've been feeding it to them for a while now, and I'm really happy with the results.

Hello everyone!
I've been sharing my experiences with dog food for a while now, and I wanted to follow up on my previous review of the Grandorf dog food in the lamb flavor. Unfortunately, my little pup started rejecting it, so I had to switch to a different flavor. I chose the duck flavor because he loves the taste of poultry, and I'm sharing my thoughts on this food and how it affected my dog.
My pup is a picky eater, and I've tried several dog foods to find the perfect one for him. I recently switched to the Grandorf Fresh Adult mini Fresh Duck, but it didn't quite work out as I had hoped.
I was excited to see the packaging highlights the benefits of this dog food, including omega 3 for skin and coat health, glucosamine for joint support, and probiotics for digestive health. And let's not forget the fresh chicken!
I love how they've showcased a mini breed on this packaging - it's a nice touch!
The side of the packaging has a Russian translation, which breaks down the ingredients and additives. On the back, there's a chart with an approximate daily serving size, but you'll need to do some math to get it spot on.
The ingredient list is solid - it's a balanced, hypoallergenic formula. Grandorf is considered one of the top dog foods out there, but I'm not sure how the quality has held up over the years. It's made in Belgium, which is a plus. What's great is that fresh and dehydrated meat takes center stage, making up 44% of the total weight. And unlike the lamb flavor, this one is a single-protein source, whereas the lamb flavor has a mix of lamb and chicken.
I was impressed by the ingredient list. They've got fresh, boneless turkey meat (26%), dehydrated turkey meat (18%), sweet potato, green beans, turkey fat (6%), carrots, turmeric root powder (a natural source of prebiotics: FOS and inulin), minerals, flaxseed, apples, carrots, brewer's yeast (a natural source of MOS and beta-glucans), salmon oil (1%), cranberries, blueberries, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, glucosamine hydrochloride (100 mg/kg), chondroitin sulfate (100 mg/kg), yucca schidigera, grapefruit, and rosemary.
I was a bit skeptical about the kibble size at first, but it's actually pretty small. I think it might be a bit tricky for larger breeds to chew, but my mini-breed pup didn't have any issues. I've included a photo comparing the kibble size for puppies (on the left) and adult mini-breed dogs. My pup definitely noticed the difference at first, but he adjusted quickly (he weighed 5.5 kg when he started eating the adult food, and then he gained another 700 grams because he's still growing).
The aroma is pleasant, but it's not as strong as some other kibbles I've tried. I actually prefer the scent of my pup's previous food, which smelled like celery - this one smells more like dried meat.
I always make sure to check the packaging before taking it home, and it's super important to ensure there are no holes or tape. Pet store owners are supposed to only accept intact packaging, but I know some of them cut corners, and I've had to ask for a replacement before. If the packaging is damaged, the kibble might not smell as good, and there's a risk of moisture getting in, which can attract pests or even live insects. I always check and replace the packaging, so I've never had any issues with the quality of the food.
I recently saw a photo that really shocked me! I was at a local convenience store that sells kibble in bulk, without packaging or even a lid - it's just like a container of candies. And the kibble was right at ankle level, so any dog that walked by could easily get to it. I was horrified!
Feeding and the Food for My Dog
I calculated a precise amount of 100 grams, then 105 grams, but he usually ate around 90-95 grams, and he wouldn't touch the regular amount of food.
But he didn't lose weight; on the contrary, he gained from 5.5 to 6.2 kilograms, and he's in perfect condition. I think he's not going to grow any more. Look at this little sunflower that grew on Grandor, and I would never have thought that he could have any problems...if it weren't for the vomiting and tooth problems.
My other dog ate this food relatively well, but this flavor was super finicky, scattering it all over the house and eating it in small amounts, like they were playing a prank on him...he struggled with this food for about 3 weeks. Everything was great, his condition was excellent, his stool was good, and then he vomited up his breakfast in two attempts, not digested, so I immediately scheduled an ultrasound. Our vet clinic is practically right under our noses, so we went. Based on my description and his condition, the vet didn't want to do the ultrasound at first, but I insisted, and in the end?
1. We found an increase in the spleen, not significantly, no changes.
2. We found a change in the intestine: signs of excessive pneumatization. What does that mean? There are gas-filled cysts in the intestinal walls, there are a few, but even I saw them on the ultrasound.
The vet recommended a gas-reducing medication and a switch to natural food, so I started the transition right away, but we were short on food, which is why we had to buy that 1 kg. The transition took 12 days. I was told to do it either gradually or abruptly, but there could be consequences, so I did it gradually.
I have to admit, I forgot to mention in my previous reviews that in the 10th month, I started noticing a film on my dog's teeth, even after brushing with Fitodoc. It's not getting worse, but it's definitely not getting better either. The worst part is that my dog won't let me brush her teeth, and I was really hoping that since she's been eating a raw diet, she wouldn't get any tartar buildup. But nope, it's still there. Our vet prescribed a different toothpaste and mouthwash, and told us that for now, we don't need to do any ultrasonic cleanings, but we'll probably have to do that in the future.
We also had to do some blood and stool tests to rule out gastritis, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the results will come back negative. But if they do come back positive, we'll probably need to start treatment.
The Verdict
I think the ingredients in this food are top-notch, and Holistic is definitely one of the best brands out there. But, it's not for every dog, and we've definitely experienced some issues with our pup. When we first switched to this food, everything seemed fine, but as she got older, she started to have some problems. She would refuse to eat, and even vomit up undigested food a few times. It was really strange.
I think it's just one of those things where every dog is different, and what works for one pup might not work for another. Our little diva has finally gotten used to eating a raw diet, and she's loving every minute of it. Even I'm not as picky as she is, and I was expecting to be on this diet for about 5k. But nope, she's already at 2k and loving it. Fingers crossed that our issues will resolve quickly, but I'm not holding my breath. If you're considering feeding your pup this food, I'd say do your research and decide for yourself. Every dog is different, and what works for one might not work for another.
