My Honest Review of Fortiflora: A Probiotic That Fell Short

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm sharing my honest experience with Fortiflora, a probiotic that my vet prescribed for my toy terrier's digestive issues. While the packaging is cute, the product itself was a total letdown. I'm detailing the good and the bad, so you can make an informed decision. After weeks of antibiotics and a special diet, I was expecting Fortiflora to be the magic solution, but unfortunately, it didn't deliver. My dog's condition improved, but I'm not convinced it was solely due to Fortiflora. If you're considering this probiotic, keep reading to learn more about my experience.

Hello there!
A Cautionary Tale.
I'm the kind of pet owner who's always on the lookout for any signs of illness in my furry friend. When my toy terrier started having frequent bowel movements and blood in her stool, I knew it was time to take action.
I visited the vet, and they prescribed a course of antibiotics, probiotics, and a special diet. Let's just say it was a long and arduous process. I'm not going to get into the details, but I do want to mention that my dog was on antibiotics for 18 days.
The probiotic they prescribed was Fortiflora. I was excited to try it, but unfortunately, it didn't quite live up to my expectations.
The Packaging.
The packaging is small, with a cute image of a dog on the front. The name of the company and the product are clearly displayed. I have to say, the design is pretty cute.
Weight: 1g.
On the back, you'll find the manufacturing date and a brief description of the product.
The Product Inside.
The probiotic itself is a brown powder with white speckles. It doesn't have a strong odor, which is a plus in my book.
As for the dosage, the vet prescribed half a packet per day. I'm not sure if that was due to my dog's small size, but it's worth noting.
Probiotics vs. Prebiotics.
For those who may not know, probiotics contain live bacteria that help populate the gut, while prebiotics stimulate the growth of existing bacteria. Fortiflora is a probiotic, but I've since learned that prebiotics can be just as effective. In fact, I've switched to a prebiotic probiotic for my dog, and it's been a game-changer.
Unfortunately, Fortiflora didn't do the trick for us. We tried it for 12 days, but saw no improvement. We even switched vets and tried a different course of treatment, but nothing seemed to work.
It's worth noting that I made sure to give my dog Fortiflora at least 6 hours after each dose of antibiotics. But despite our best efforts, the probiotic just didn't seem to have any effect.
And to make matters worse, Fortiflora is quite expensive - 60 rubles per packet. I'm not saying it's not worth a try, but for us, it was a total waste of money.
The Only Silver Lining.
The only positive thing I can say about Fortiflora is that it helped my dog eat her dry food during the transition period. She's a picky eater, and the probiotic's smell seemed to make the food more palatable. But that's about it.
Since then, we've switched to a different probiotic, and I'm happy to report that it's been a lifesaver. But that's a story for another time.
The Verdict.
I wouldn't recommend Fortiflora. It didn't work for us, and there are better options out there. If you're considering trying it, I'd say do your research and talk to your vet before making a decision.
I've since discovered a different probiotic that's been a lifesaver.
One thing I want to add is that Fortiflora may not have worked for us because the treatment was misdiagnosed. My dog had an infection, and the antibiotics and probiotic just weren't enough to clear it up. But that's not to say it wouldn't work for others.
So, to sum it up, Fortiflora may be worth a try if you're looking for a probiotic, but it's not a magic bullet. Do your research, talk to your vet, and don't be afraid to try something else if it doesn't work out.
