Our Journey with Electrophoresis for My Baby's Hip Dysplasia
I've shared our experience with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip and the Freika mattress and shoe in a previous post.
Today, I want to share our experience with Electrophoresis on the hip joints, which our doctor prescribed three times a week for 10 procedures in combination with massage and a shoe.
So, let's dive into the details.
Electrophoresis is a medical treatment that uses electrical currents to stimulate healing and reduce pain. In our case, it was prescribed to help treat my baby's hip dysplasia.
The doctor first prescribed Electrophoresis for my son after diagnosing Developmental Dysplasia at 3.5 months.
I had no idea what this procedure was or why it was necessary, so I had to Google it.
Electrophoresis on the hip joint with calcium is prescribed for the treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system, including developmental dysplasia of the hip, dislocations, and subluxations.
The goal of the procedure is to supply the bone tissue with the necessary material, relieve tension and swelling from damaged tissues, and relax the muscles.
Plus, my son was missing ossification centers at 3.5 months, which is supposedly okay but not ideal.
We were prescribed two types of solutions: Calcium Chloride and Natrum Phosphoricum.
The electrophoresis with sodium phosphate on the hip joint is intended to improve tissue regeneration and recovery (especially bone tissue), as well as normalize metabolic processes.
However, the complexity lay in the fact that the ready-made solution in the polyclinic had run out, and I had to go to the production pharmacy to have it made there.
I had left a request with a photo of the recipe on their website beforehand, and they got in touch with me to clarify the details and schedule the production.
How and where is electrophoresis on hip joints performed?
I took my son to the physiotherapy department of the state polyclinic for this procedure.
There's a notice like this hanging on the entrance to the room:
The procedure goes like this:
First, I lay down a disposable sheet, put my baby down, and remove his pants.
It's more comfortable for the child to wear pull-ups with adhesive strips rather than diapers.
This makes it easier to fix the pads with electrodes.
The nurse takes the cotton pads, soaks them in the calcium solution, and then applies the electrodes attached to the pads to the skin above the joint.
In our case, one long pad was placed on the back, and two others on the sides of the abdomen.
I carefully fasten the diaper and secure it with a band to prevent the electrodes from slipping if the baby moves around.
On the special device with wires leading to the baby, you set the time and power.

I had my baby lie still for exactly 10 minutes.
The nurse actually allowed me to pick up the baby and even feed them if they wanted or got upset.
I preferred not to touch my son too much, worried that something would come loose and the procedure wouldn't be effective.
I had to keep an eye on the baby the whole time.
I guess it's normal for babies around six months to get curious about the wires.
They need to be touched, and preferably taken away altogether.
Is it painful?
Our first course of 10 sessions was at 3.5 months.
At that time, my baby lay still throughout the procedure with a pacifier.
Other older kids behind the wall were crying and whining.
The second course was at 5 months.
My son was expressing his discontent, but easily got distracted by toys and cartoons on my phone.
I was blown away by how determined my little one was to get out of the crib at 7.5 months!
Of course, he still didn't know how to do it, but he was dead set on it.
Those 10 minutes felt like an eternity, and I tried to keep him entertained as best I could.
Even the nurses brought out the standard issue baby organizer, but my son was having none of it.
I asked the procedure nurse what was behind this sudden change in behavior, and she said it's because babies become more sensitive to pain as they get older.
I think I know the real reason, though - my little one is just getting more active.
He's not the same baby who used to just lie there and roll over.
Now he's all about sitting up, reaching for things, and getting into mischief.
So, of course, he's going to react this way.
Of course, at 4 or 6 months, a baby can't exactly tell you what they thought of the procedure.
But my friend's older kid described it as feeling like a little ant running around - it was poky, but not exactly painful.
The effect of the procedure
It's hard to say how much of an impact the electrotherapy had on the TB joint, separate from the cast and the massage.
I don't think it's really worth trying to break it down, though.
The diagnosis is gone, and the joints are looking better - and it's all thanks to a combination of treatments.
As for the ossification centers in the femur heads, after three rounds of electrotherapy with calcium, our orthopedist gave them a glowing review.
"What beautiful ossification centers!"
she said, looking at the X-ray of my kid's legs.
I guess that's what you get when your kid is under a year old!
I asked the doctor how much of a role the electrotherapy played in all this, and she said it was a major contributor.
For me, the Electrophoresis procedure on hip joints had some clear pros and cons.
Super easy for the kid.It takes just a minute to put on the electrodes, and that's it.The little one just lies there.Pretty painless.If it hurt, the kid would let me know, and trust me, they'd make their feelings known!Effective.The results from the X-ray and the diagnosis of Dysplasia confirm it.Cons:
Need to have a 40-minute break before the procedure.We'd come in after a massage, and just have to wait.We bought the solution ourselves once, but then the clinic provided it.Lying still for 10 minutes isn't exactly a challenge, but for active kids, it can be a real ordeal.Despite that, Electrophoresis on the hip joint area gets a well-deserved five stars from me, because it worked!
