What I love about the breed.

Sanza is a sphynx 'rubber' - completely hairless, with a minimal amount of fur around her tail and paws. The touch of her skin is very pleasant, and it's surprisingly soft and warm. So, in cold weather, I have a great alternative to a hot water bottle!

The body temperature of a sphynx is 38.5–39.5 °C. This is due to a more active metabolic rate and compensation for heat loss, as the sphynx doesn't have fur to protect it from cold.

It's common for sphynx cats to have no whiskers at all, but Sanza has them. They're small, funny, and a bit uneven.

Challenges of the breed.

I'll be the first to admit it - the maintenance is a lot of work. With Sanza, I need a whole arsenal of cleaning products. The little guys' eyes tend to get all teary, so I'm constantly wiping their paws with special drops. I also clean their ears every 3-4 days, sometimes even daily.

I bathe my Sphynx in the tub once a week, sometimes more often if needed. Water's not a problem for these guys - they actually love getting clean! But, man, it's exhausting cleaning all that dirt from their paw pads. And don't even get me started on trying to get those creme-colored discharge stains out of their clothes. It's a nightmare. The second thing: Don Sphynx are bottomless pits. Even if you just fed them and you're sitting down to eat, those little faces will be in your plate in 30 seconds flat. They inhale their food like they're starving, and they don't even chew properly. I've seen my little Sphynx wolf down her kibble and then try to sneak into Bassy's bowl, which is like the ultimate slow eater. Let's just say I have to keep a close eye on these guys - they'll clean you out if you're not careful. And since they're prone to allergies, it's a good idea not to let them eat off your plate. I swear, my Sphynx will eat anything - I've even caught her chomping on an ogre once.

Some people might see the high energy level of Don Sphynx as a con, but for me, it's a major plus. I wanted a lively pet, and these guys deliver. That being said, the kitchen chairs are basically toast. They look terrible after a few weeks of use, so I'm holding off on replacing them until Sphynx gets a bit older. She loves to climb up the chair backs like they're trees, and I'm left with shredded upholstery and a bunch of torn fabric. So, yeah, be prepared to replace your furniture - or at least get some sturdy chairs.

The good stuff.

I've been impressed with how well Sanza gets along with other pets. I've never seen any aggression from the kitty towards Mr. Baskin. However, Mr. Baskin was a bit of a bully towards Sansa at first. He'd sneak up on her, attack, and pounce. It was no game - I was surprised by the level of aggression from a cat that's normally so laid-back. It's been years since Mr. Baskin has been just a piece of furniture, sleeping and eating most of the time. He's not interested in toys, and his midnight strolls have been a thing of the past since the first year. Our family is important to him, but he prefers to keep his distance. He'll tolerate being petted, but only if it's on his own terms - like if you gently pet his belly. He's not a fan of being picked up, though. The kids have been roughhousing with him, and he's never shown any aggression towards them. They've never been bitten or scratched. Since Sansa arrived, things have changed. Mr. Baskin has become pretty impossible around her. It's been a while, but the catfights between them still happen from time to time. The only difference now is that Sansa is big enough to give Mr. Baskin a good scolding whenever he tries to attack her. So, he's learned to approach her with caution. Sansa, on the other hand, has never shown any aggression towards him.

Sansa loves warmth and blankets. I often catch her sleeping on the radiator or snuggled up in a blanket. And she's really good at getting into them without any help. I had two old blankets that I was going to throw away, but Sanza claimed them as her own. I leave them on the couch on the first floor, and I've also given her some old pillows. She loves to lie on them and snuggle up in a blanket. It's just the cutest thing.

My little ball of energy is absolutely loving life. She's super playful, affectionate, and loves my kids - they're absolutely smitten with her. Sanza's got a ton of toys to keep her entertained, from balls to tunnels to feather wands, and she'll play for hours on end. What's really great is that she's adapted so well to our lifestyle. At night, when we're all tucked in, she curls up right next to us and sleeps through the night. She doesn't like to wander off or meow loudly (although my husband does have a tendency to sing to her at 3 am), and she doesn't wake us up in the morning. She's a great little sleeper.

She's a total cuddlebug - she loves to snuggle up next to someone and will often fall asleep on me or the kids. She just needs someone to be nearby, and she'll sleep peacefully.

A little about the quirks…

My cat Sansa has this weird habit of sucking her own nipples. It's pretty regular, happens every night before sleep. I guess it's her way of unwinding. I don't know how to break her of this habit, though. Wearing her a sweater doesn't help – she still manages to find the nipple and suck on it. It's accompanied by this adorable slurping sound. I think it's because we took her from her mom too early. We adopted Sansa when she was two months old. We booked a reservation for the cat, but we didn't rush to pick her up. We would've waited for three months, but the breeder seemed eager to get paid, so they handed her over to us at two months and four days.

I still haven't figured out how to stop her from doing this. I was worried she'd suck her nipples so hard they'd bleed or get hurt somehow, but nothing like that's happened, and she just keeps on doing it.
