I've been hooked on Agatha Christie's works since I was a kid. I've read and re-read her books countless times, and she's still one of my all-time favorite authors.
One of the first books of hers that I read was Death on the Nile, Murder on the Orient Express, and Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Those are still some of my favorites. With the new movie adaptation just around the corner, it's time to revisit the source material.
I'm not sure if I'll end up watching the Death on the Nile movie, but I'll definitely check it out. The previous adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express didn't really do it for me, though.
The problem with both of these films is that they prioritize getting big-name stars on board over delivering a quality story. But let's get back to the book.

About the Story
Agatha Christie's plots often follow a similar pattern. In this series, Hercule Poirot is the main character, and he finds himself on Carnac Island by chance, as he's on a vacation.
On the ship, a tragedy occurs, and a well-known millionaire, Linnet Ridgeway, is murdered. Before her death, she had consulted with a famous detective for help.
This book isn't a closed-room mystery, as the action takes place not only on the ship but also in various cities and landmarks across Africa.
When I first read this, I was completely hooked. At the time, I wasn't a huge fan of detective novels, and the story and its twists were some of the best I'd read in my teenage years.

Characters
I've always been a fan of Hercule Poirot. While Agatha Christie has another famous character, Miss Marple, I just haven't connected with her stories. I'm not a fan of tales featuring retirees.
This part of the series is enjoyable, and it's partly because of the characters. While there are many characters, I wouldn't say there are any particularly standout or memorable ones.
I have to say, one of the most intriguing characters for me was actually Linnet herself, who got killed off but had a pretty limited time in the book. She's not exactly a positive character, and I have to admit, she kind of rubbed me the wrong way, but that's also what makes her interesting.
The other characters are pretty similar to those in Murder on the Orient Express, but maybe I'm just imagining things. Following the characters is interesting, although I'll repeat myself, I don't really connect with any of them except for Poirot.

The Detective Plot
I'm one of those people who doesn't even try to piece together all the clues and figure out the killer before it's revealed in the end. Although, I have to admit, with Agatha Christie's books, it wouldn't even be possible.
Her detective plots, on the other hand, are what really get me pumped up, and I read them just because I enjoy how she weaves everything together and keeps the reader guessing.
While Death on the Nile is also really engaging, it still can't compare to Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Now, when it comes to a thrilling plot and an unexpected ending, I compare every detective story to this one, and none of them even come close.
I have to say, the detective line in Death on the Nile is pretty engaging, at least in part because everything happens in hot Africa, and the whole line is just soaked in its local flavor. There are tons of descriptions of the natural world, local landmarks, and other quirks of the country that really set it apart from the author's other works, where everything usually takes place in a house, estate, or at someone's home.

Conclusion
To be honest, it's not a favorite of mine, and I got tired of it by the time I was a teenager. I re-read it about 10 times back then, and now that I'm older, I just don't feel like going back to this story.
I'm still enjoying the fact that Agatha Christie's detective novels can be read out of time, and even in 2021, they're still interesting and don't feel dated.
I think younger generations might not enjoy it as much, and that's understandable. The more time passes, the more kids seem to degrade. I'm not even sure if most of them know the author's name.
From my perspective, I'd recommend it, but it's not a favorite of mine even after all these years. I've lost interest in re-reading it, and my all-time favorite remains Murder on the Orient Express.
