I'm excited to share my experience with the De Luxe Sensation semi-permanent hair dye from Estel Professional.
I have to admit, my previous experience with Estel's semi-permanent dyes was a bit of a letdown - the Sens hair dye didn't quite meet my expectations. On the other hand, the classic Prince series is one of my favorites, and the grey hair dye has been doing a decent job, so I decided to give the new semi-permanent a try.
The main goal of a semi-permanent hair dye is to gently color previously bleached hair without affecting the natural base. For me, personally, that's not a big deal, but in my line of work, I often encounter this problem. So, it would be great to find a suitable option for working with the technique without getting those unwanted reddish roots. As a total blonde, I don't need to worry about leaving my roots intact - I bleach all my hair.
But I do need a very gentle dye. My main issue with Sens was exactly that - it wasn't gentle enough on my hair. It felt like I was using a permanent dye, which is extremely damaging to bleached hair. And my main issue with the Vintage grey hair dye is that it gives a too yellowish tone to the highlights, thanks to the complete lack of neutralization. This means I need to tone my hair afterwards.
I've gotta say, if you're looking for a salon-quality color job without breaking the bank, Prince is a solid choice. For under $200, you can get a great lightening job that'll leave your hair looking amazing at level 10. But if you're willing to splurge, the Vintage and Sensation kits are worth it - they're super gentle and will give you the most natural-looking color possible.
For me, hair quality is top priority, so I opted for the more expensive Prince kit. I'm planning to try out the Kérastase hair color kits next - I hope they're better at neutralizing the color.
Compared to the initial Prince job, my hair looks way better. It's still not perfect - I wish I'd moisturized the ends a bit more. But overall, it's a noticeable improvement. And compared to the Sensation kit, it's like night and day. Sensation is super gentle and doesn't damage your natural hair at all.
I specifically did this color job when my roots were just starting to show to see how it would hold up. The color turned out great - it's a nice, even tone considering my hair wasn't exactly a blank slate to begin with. Since I'm doing my own hair color, there are some areas that are a bit over- or under-lightened. But the color corrected really well and looks great.
I'm not getting 100% color hit, but at least it's not a bright yellow when it's supposed to be purple. On my super yellow base, this neutral beige looks pretty good.
It looks great - a huge improvement from before.
The blonde color is really versatile. It looks different depending on the lighting and surroundings.
During the day, the shade is actually very close to the one in the color palette. The purple is really noticeable. But again, the color drops become more apparent.
But overall, they're not critical. Next time, I think I'll prep a yellow toner to fill in the over-lit areas.
Now I don't have to worry about it - the color is absolutely safe, and it's really gentle on my hair, causing no damage whatsoever.
I was naturally hesitant to do it before, since permanent toning for hair isn't great for it. Now I can do a double or triple toner treatment - it's safe, so it's easier to achieve the desired color result.
Even at 3% coverage, it didn't touch the natural base of my hair. And my hair feels soft to the touch and has a nice shine to it. With the flash, it gives more shine. But even just by feel, you can tell the quality of my hair after coloring is on a good level. I've never felt that way after using a hair dye before. And what really surprised and pleased me about this product is that the quality of my hair isn't damaged by this coloring method. Although it's definitely not budget-friendly - compared to coloring with Prions, it's a cosmic difference of 4 times. This is even not counting the multiple applications of the toner treatment.
My dye consumption is surprisingly high. I usually go through 40 grams of dye for a single application - this time, I didn't quite have enough. I didn't bother mixing the leftovers - the tube has 60 ml, so I'll be able to use it all up next time. I did manage to get about 40 grams of color on my hair, but there are still some unpigmented strands on the back of my head.
The recipe calls for 40 grams of shade 9.61, plus 3% developer (40 grams), and 40 grams of any regular shampoo (not the special post-coloring series, not the clarifying one, and not the sulfate-free one). I like using the Estel Couteur Lab shampoo set for my conditioning treatments - it's a win-win for coloring and caring for my hair. However, even with this gentle formula, the Prince's dye still manages to cause damage, and the natural base is still lifted. The only exception is with 1.5% developer, but then the color doesn't last as long, and the coverage isn't as good. If you need a warm tone, you might be able to get away with the 1.5% developer, but if you need to neutralize the color, you're better off with the 3% developer.
I don't mix the dye with a mixer until it's smooth - I prefer the way it looks when the color is fully incorporated, like the way it's done at the salon. Maybe I just need a more powerful mixer - my dye mixture always ends up a bit foamy, but not quite to the point of being a mousse. It still applies easily, like a shampoo, so it's perfect for at-home express coloring.
The smell is, of course, completely amonia-free - this is a semi-permanent, non-ammonia dye, so it's only suitable for previously lightened hair.
I'm really pleased with the results - it's a breeze to use and the finish is great. There are some downsides, though - it's not cheap, the color range isn't entirely what I was expecting, and it goes through a lot. But compared to other semi-permanent dyes I've tried (like Olaplex), this is a great option.
I'll definitely be using it again. The best part is that it doesn't damage your hair, and the color range is really wide - there's something for everyone, and it's pretty true to the color chart.
