I recently bought this doll for my daughter, Koni, after she saw it in a TV ad and begged me to get it. The ad made it look like a really cool toy, and I was hoping it would be worth the high price tag. Unfortunately, it's been a letdown.
First, a little backstory. I bought it on Yandex Market in early 2023 for 4,499 rubles. Now it's 4,740 rubles. It's also available on Wish, where it's currently priced from 4,154 rubles. On Kari in October 2023, I found it for 5,500 rubles. The average price for these dolls is around 4,000-5,000 rubles +/-.
The doll came in a throne-shaped box, which was tightly secured. By the time I'm writing this review, the box has already been thrown away. The box had some info on it, including the fact that the doll should cry 'real' tears and make sounds. Unfortunately, there's no detailed Russian instruction.
The costume is cute and well-made. The jacket has a hood and ears, the dress has a built-in pacifier, the shorts, and the rubber boots. The handles and legs are made of different materials. The handles are a sturdy plastic, but the legs look like cheap plastic that's almost see-through. Check out the soles. It's the same kind of plastic you'd find on a 100-ruble doll.
Honestly, this doll doesn't make a big impression. Yeah, it's made well, but it's not wow-worthy. Take the Lol OMG dolls (they're for adults). When we first got them, it was a thrill. The packaging is really thought out, with all these little effects (mirrors, holograms) and compartments. There are tons of accessories, and the clothes are made perfectly with tiny details like zippers and belts. The doll itself is also super well-made, with painted toenails and all that. In short, it's got a ton of details and it's made really well. We didn't have any questions about whether it was worth the 3,000+ rubles.
Cry Babies, on the other hand, looks pretty basic for a 5,000-ruble price tag! And the legs are even a letdown.
This doll comes with batteries and is supposed to make 10 sounds, according to the packaging. The speaker is located on the chest. I expected it to be some words or a little song, but honestly, I can't even distinguish the 10 different sounds. It's just a bunch of cooing, giggling, and crying. And to be honest, these sounds are pretty similar. I will say that it sounds like a real baby, but for 5,000 rubles, it's just not enough.
The doll turns on with a slider on its back. The slider has three positions: off and two others. When it's in one position, the doll makes happy cooing sounds, and when it's in the other, it whimpers. It would be nice if it made all the sounds in one position and sang or read in the other. Maybe they could have added a 'repeat' function. At least something more interesting than just a baby's 'bla-bla'.
The sounds are activated by the pacifier. Apparently, there's some kind of button or sensor in the mouth. So, the doll starts making sounds when you manipulate the pacifier - when you take it out and put it back in.
At first, we thought the doll reacted to voice or movement. We'd talk to it, rock it, and all that. And that would've been cool if it actually responded to movement, like stopping crying when rocked or giggling when talked to. But that's just my fantasy when I'm wondering why this doll is so pricey.
The most important part – the tears! After all, that's what Cry Babies are all about in English. I couldn't find any detailed instructions. You just need to fill the container in the head with water. There are two caps – a rose-colored top one that comes off. And underneath that, there's another cap with a window that unscrews. Inside – a cavity.
Coney didn't cry for almost a year! I tried everything – shaking it and talking to it. It was a total letdown. Not only is the doll unimpressive, but it also doesn't cry, which is its selling point. I couldn't find any explanation for this online.
When I was writing this review (10 months later), I decided to try filling the water again. I was intrigued by the tube sticking out. I filled the tube and the space around it, but the water poured out of its mouth like a river. It seems there are two separate cavities – one that drains into the mouth and another that drains into the eyes.
Then I filled the water exactly into the white hole. And, surprise, Coney started crying! I have no idea why it didn't cry for so long, despite me refilling the water multiple times. My daughter carried the doll with full water for several days, but it didn't produce a single tear. The eye is covered with a thick 'lens,' and the water drains out from underneath it, down below.
If you've encountered the same issue – 'Cry Babies don't cry,' I'd suggest waiting a bit and filling the top cavity that drains into the mouth. Maybe that somehow 'activated' the doll. But that's just my fantasy – I have no idea why it didn't cry and why it finally did.

The 10 sounds are basically just generic crying, screaming, and laughing - I couldn't even distinguish them to count 10 different ones. I'd be comfortable shelling out around 2,000-2,500 rubles for this doll. For 5,000 rubles, it's just too basic and lacks any unique interactive features - no voice recognition, no rocking motion, just nothing. And let's not forget the poor build quality of the body and legs. I regret buying it, especially now that it's been a day since it even cried. I think they just overhyped it. You can get a doll like Reborn or a collectible Barbie for the same price. By the way, my 4-5-year-old daughter barely plays with it - she's more interested in her regular little LOL dolls.
So, I'm giving it 3 stars and would only recommend it if you're looking to splurge on your kid and already have all the cool toys.
