My Winter Wonderland Coleus Surprise

summarizeEditor's Summary

I'm obsessed with my Coleus Crimson Ruffles, a stunning houseplant that's been a long-time favorite of mine. My mom gave me a new cutting, and I was excited to try something new - shaping it into a tree-like form was a bit of a process, but the end result was totally worth it. To my delight, the plant took to its new conditions and started growing rapidly, and I was thrilled to admire its unique leaf pattern. It's amazing how a new cutting can bring back memories - I had this plant a few years ago, but it's like it's brand new all over again.

Coleus Crimson Ruffles has been a long-time favorite of mine.
I had it a few years ago, and I thought it was so beautiful on its own that it couldn't possibly bloom. I mean, what's not to love about a colorful houseplant? The thing is, when I had to move, I had to leave it behind. It was one of those tough decisions, but I knew I'd find another one eventually.
But recently, my mom gave me a new Coleus cutting, and I was excited to try something new. I checked out some videos on shaping the plant into a tree-like form, and I decided to give it a shot. I planted it in a pot, intertwined the stems, and secured them with clips. It was a bit of a process, but I was determined to get it right.
To my delight, the plant took to its new conditions and started growing rapidly. I was thrilled to admire its unique leaf pattern - it's really something else.
Then, one day, I looked over and - to my surprise - the Coleus had bloomed! I couldn't believe it - a young plant in December, when it's all gray and gloomy outside. The flowers are these tiny, pale blue things that are just the sweetest thing.
So, I did some research online to figure out why my old plant never bloomed, and this one did so quickly. That's when I discovered that my plant is actually a different type of Coleus - Coleus blumei, also known as Solenostemon scutellarioides. It's a bit of a mouthful, but it's worth learning about. It's got small, pale blue (or white or pink) flowers, clustered in a raceme. Typically, the plant blooms in the spring and summer, but mine decided to surprise me in the winter! I guess you could say it's a winter wonderland bloomer.
Well, I guess we'll just have to keep watching and enjoying this unexpected winter bloomer! It's been a real treat to have around the house, and I'm so glad I got to experience it.
