My Canon EOS R5 Review: A Mixed Bag for Video, But Photos Shine

summarizeEditor's Summary

I was really hoping the Canon EOS R5 would be a game-changer for both photo and video, but unfortunately, it's a total letdown when it comes to the latter. The footage is soft and lacking in detail, the autofocus is a nightmare to work with, and don't even get me started on the lack of stabilization. On the bright side, the camera does take decent photos, especially in good lighting. The sensor performs well, and the interface is familiar and easy to use - a big plus for those already familiar with Canon cameras.

A Camera with Potential - But Video Falls Short
I was really hoping the Canon EOS R5 would be a game-changer for both photo and video, but unfortunately, it's a total letdown when it comes to the latter. The footage is soft and lacking in detail, the autofocus is a nightmare to work with, and don't even get me started on the lack of stabilization. Even with good lighting, the results are nowhere near what I expected. And let's not forget the audio - it's basically unusable without an external mic. I mean, what's the point of having a high-end camera if the audio quality is subpar?
Now, I'll give credit where credit is due: the camera does take decent photos, especially in good lighting. The sensor performs well, and the interface is familiar and easy to use. The grip is also comfortable, which is a nice touch. I've been using the camera for a week now, and I have to say, the build quality has surprised me. The buttons feel solid, and the battery life is longer than I expected.
But, unfortunately, all these positives can't make up for the subpar video and audio. If you're planning on shooting video, you're better off looking elsewhere. I was expecting more from the Canon EOS R5, especially considering its price point. It's a shame, really, because this camera has the potential to be a top-notch shooter - but it just falls short in the video department.
So, to sum it up, I'd give the Canon EOS R5 3 out of 5 stars. It's a good camera, but not ideal for video. If you're a photographer, you might want to consider this camera - but if you're a videographer, keep looking.
Poor video quality: The Canon EOS R5's video capabilities are a major letdown. Poor audio: Without an external mic, the audio quality is basically unusable. Unreliable autofocus: This is really frustrating, especially in fast-paced situations. Lack of stabilization: Another major drawback for videographers. Familiar interface: This is definitely a plus for photographers who are already familiar with Canon's interface. Good photo quality in good lighting: The Canon EOS R5 takes great photos, especially in good lighting conditions. Sensor performance: The sensor performs well, and delivers great results. Comfortable grip: The grip is also comfortable, which is a nice touch.
