SEEDS AND SOWING 🌱

You can easily find Viola seeds in any gardening store, as they're super popular in horticulture. There are tons of varieties to choose from - single-toned, speckled, striped, with contrasting 'eyes,' and even some with a fluffy texture.

We bought our seeds in a local store for around 20 rubles.

We chose the 'Black King' variety from 'Search' company because the color is just amazing.

We sowed the seeds using the 'Terra Vita' universal potting mix. The seeds germinated on February 23, after being planted on February 12.

The seedlings sat on the east-facing windowsill without any additional lighting.

Blooming 🌹

Now, let's talk about the flower color. I have to say, I was a bit skeptical that the color would match the one on the packaging.

We've had cases where the color didn't match what the manufacturer claimed on the packaging, but this time it did.

The flowers are large and have a velvety texture. I mean, it's no wonder the viola is called a 'king' – it's a fitting name! These violas look luxurious, if you will.

The center of the flower is beautiful too. I have to say, I think it would have looked better if we'd placed it in a spot with more sunlight, and against a background of lighter or contrasting colors.

Blooming in the second year

The anemone flowers self-seeded, and the violas started blooming in the first half of the summer period.

They looked beautiful next to the jasmine.

The flowers are just as large and beautiful, with a velvety texture. The color is a deep, dark purple with a bright yellow center.

As for caring for the flowers, a good watering is essential – we removed the mulch, of course, and did some pruning and aeration. And if you remove the wilted flowers, it'll encourage new blooms to form.

Fun fact: viola flowers are edible! Have you tried them?

I have to say, I was a bit worried about not being able to collect the seeds, given that this is a biennial plant.

Next to them, I planted other viola varieties, including the perennial viola with a horn-like shape.
