I've been eyeing 'The Poisonous' by Anna Oduvalova for a long time, and I'm glad I finally gave it a shot. The cover art is stunning, and I love the design – it's eye-catching and really sets the tone for the story. The main character, Aiyris, looks exactly like I'd imagine her – poisonous and intimidating.
The book itself is a substantial size, clocking in at over 800 pages. It's definitely not a book you'd want to take on the go, as it's pretty heavy and takes up a lot of space. The cardboard is sturdy and of good quality, but I do have some concerns about the binding – there are a few minor issues, but considering the price and size of the book, it's not a deal-breaker.
The internal design is nice, with notes and handwritten titles throughout the story. There are also some small inserts with the main characters, drawn by ALES in her signature style. However, I'm not a fan of the paper quality – it's thin and yellowish, almost like a photocopy. I have to be careful not to tear the pages when I turn them, as they feel fragile.

The font is medium, the margins are also, but due to the design, similar to a notebook, and with handwritten text at the bottom, part of the space for the story is taken away. As a result, the text fits on a page, to say, a lot. Even scary to imagine what the story would be like if it were printed in a single book (although it used to be that way), because here, taking into account such a design, it takes up only 317 pages.
My Impressions
First of all, I didn't like the fact that the book lacks chapter divisions. The collection is divided into three books, each of which consists of several parts. In the case of 'Poisonous', this is three parts, the first of which takes up half the story, and the remaining two parts divide the other half unevenly.
This is inconvenient, as there is no point of reference. There is no opportunity to stop and think about what has been read, the text goes on and on in a single flow. There is a lack of some kind of break: the narrative goes forward, sometimes telling about one day, and the next paragraph already about the next morning. This sometimes confuses, sometimes tires.
Aside from that, there is a feeling that the author is also getting lost. Sometimes in the text, it seems that there is a lack of pieces, events occur out of nowhere, some pieces are muddled and require explanations, which are simply not there in the story.
The entire book is built on the fact that local kids from a college for the wealthy hate Ayris, and, apparently, not even for the reason that she's not rich enough. They call her 'Poisonous' because she's poisoning the lives of 'golden youth', but how she's poisoning them, and why they're so hostile, I just didn't understand. Ayris is like a persona non grata, but personally, I didn't get enough background on why she became that way. The story about the murder mentioned in the annotation doesn't quite match, as according to the text, Ayris wasn't involved until then.
The text is very easy to read, I'd even say it's boring. It's simple, like Anna's other books, which I've read. They all boil down to the same thing: a girl with magical abilities, with some problems, trying to do something and not fall in love with the guy she shouldn't. Ayris, however, doesn't think about love - thanks for that, and for not having constant inner monologues and dilemmas in the book.
I have to say, this book is basically a wild goose chase: Iris tries to investigate her classmate's death and a new drug that's surfaced in town, but everything that happens is just too crazy. I mean, there's some piano in the bushes, and the culprit just strolls out with a sign that says 'Guilty as charged.' It's impossible to guess what's going to happen next.
The romance plot is pretty meager and doesn't evoke any emotions. The main character is interesting because of his behavior, but I really needed more backstory to connect with him and Iris.
Overall Impression

I'll finish reading it, but I won't be leaving a review or recommending it to anyone.
