We took our son to the Theatre of Contemporary Drama to catch the show 'A Sizzling Incident in the New Year's Woods' before the holidays.
The show promised to be 'sizzling' just from the description:Every forest dweller is getting ready to celebrate the New Year. Even the Hedgehog, who usually sleeps in his burrow, was woken up by the Squirrel to celebrate the main holiday of the year for the first time in his life. But the cunning Baba Yaga came up with a clever plan to ruin the New Year. She specifically called her friend, Aunt Scorch, to join her and make sure that instead of a Christmas tree, a real palm tree would grow in the forest. Will the villains succeed in ruining the holiday, and will the Squirrel be able to help his friend the Hedgehog celebrate the New Year for the first time in his life?
This show is definitely different from traditional Christmas tree shows.
First off, the villains here aren't scary, but rather funny. Aunt Scorch is a 'fiery woman, a poet's dream' (or Miss Anapa 2010). Baba Yaga is a modern woman, 'an active member of Moscow's longevity'. She wears stylish clothes and aviator glasses.
Secondly, the antagonists don't do evil for the sake of evil. They have a specific goal. They just don't like winter, cold, and frost (I completely understand them).
Of course, the rest of the forest dwellers want to celebrate the New Year, meet Grandfather Frost with the Snow Maiden, and get presents from them. That's when the battle between winter and summer begins.
The friendship will win in the end, of course!
The actors played wonderfully, but my son was especially charmed by the main villains and the Christmas tree/palm tree. She danced so energetically and accompanied the rhythm with maracas that I also wanted to dance along.
What also stuck in our memory was the moment when the Christmas tree actress lit up with New Year's lights. It was pure magic - nothing else could compare!
And at the end of the show, the kids were greeted by a Christmas tree with Grandfather Frost, the Snow Maiden, the Squirrel, the Hedgehog, and even the Palm Tree came to visit the New Year's lights! They played fun games with the kids, danced, and did a funny warm-up. And at the end, there was a photo session under the festive Christmas tree. The Christmas tree in the theater deserves a special mention - it's decorated with photos from various theater shows. Very creative!
This show definitely wins over traditional Christmas tree shows in terms of creativity and plot. There are no wow shows and mega special effects. Instead, there's a very kind and funny story about friendship, kindness, forgiveness, and believing in miracles. This is a very cozy, intimate production with wonderful actors that's definitely not going to go unnoticed among the numerous New Year's events.
I highly recommend watching this show - it's going to be sizzling!
We left the theater singing 'in the woods, a palm tree was born'.
