A Psycho in Europe - How My Daughter Became His Next Victim

summarizeEditor's Summary

I went into 'A Psycho in Europe' expecting a gripping thriller, but what I got was a lighthearted detective movie with a mix of crime and drama. The main character, Jacob Cannon, is a seasoned New York detective, but the story feels overly long and lacks real suspense. While it's an enjoyable watch, it's not as intense as I thought it'd be. If you're a fan of detective movies, you might still enjoy it, but don't expect too much excitement. The atmosphere is well-set, and the plot has some interesting twists, but it's not enough to make it a standout film. Overall, it's a decent watch, but not a game-changer. The movie's got a good mix of genres, and the setting is immersive, but the pacing could be improved to keep the story moving.

Hello there!
I stumbled upon this detective movie because of the main character, Jacob Cannon - a seasoned New York detective you might know from his roles in Supernatural as Dean and Sam Winchester's dad, or The Walking Dead as Negan.
The genre that really caught my attention is detective, and it's a mix of crime and drama, but I'd say it's primarily a detective-crime movie. The drama's not really developed, and I didn't see any thriller elements at all, because it's not really suspenseful.
By the way, don't always believe the trailers. The trailer made it look super scary, with a killer who murders people brutally. I thought it was going to be something like Saw, but it's actually pretty lighthearted.
🔎 GENERAL INFO 🔎
Here are the details:
Genres: thriller, detective, crime, drama
Countries: UK, Germany, USA
Director: Danis Tanovic
Runtime: 91 minutes
Now, let's get to the description.
London, Madrid, Stockholm. A super gruesome and clever killer is terrorizing Europe, moving from city to city and taunting the police by sending cryptic clues in the form of postcards from museums. One of his victims is the daughter of Jacob Cannon, a seasoned New York detective. Now it's his mission to find the killer and get revenge.
I've seen so many movies about killers that it's hard to keep track. What really caught my attention about this one is that the killer is an art connoisseur. The museum postcards are a new twist. But I've always wondered, why would a killer give the police clues? Is it just to get caught faster? I mean, is the killer subconsciously wanting to be caught?
The movie starts with a scene of two bodies sitting next to each other. At first, I didn't even realize they were dead. They looked like a couple watching a super boring movie late at night.
Their blood had been drained, and their hands had been chopped off.
The girl on the right turned out to be the daughter of American detective Jacob Kanon.
Movie Clue 2020 From there, the story unfolds. Our main character gets pulled into a murder investigation with European cops, following the trail of a killer.
Movie Clue 2020 The dramatic part is the emotional toll it takes on the cop and his ex-wife after the death of his daughter.
Movie Clue 2020 And then there's the motives behind the murders.
ATMOSPHERE
The movie is very slow-burning. Events unfold at a leisurely pace. This isn't your typical American action flick with explosions and police chases.
Movie Clue 2020 It's set in Europe, so you get to see beautiful European locations. I particularly loved the train scenes.
Mystery of the Opened Envelope 2020 As I dug deeper into the mystery, I found that Jacob was in contact with various investigators, each with their own approach to the case.
Parallel Storylines
I was intrigued by the parallel storylines, particularly the one about a couple who meets a brutish tattooed Swedish guy on a train.
Mystery of the Opened Envelope 2020Mystery of the Opened Envelope 2020 At first, these storylines run parallel, but as the film progresses, they start to intersect in unexpected ways.
The Killer's Identity
The killer's identity is revealed around the middle of the film, and I won't spoil it for you, but the twist is what makes the movie interesting. The real question is how the investigation unfolds.
There are some unexpected turns in the story, which kept me engaged until the very end.
My Impressions
Mystery of the Opened Envelope is a European film with its own unique style and tone. It's a dark and gritty mystery with a lighthearted approach. The setup was promising, but the film itself dragged on a bit.
Who's it for? If you're a fan of slow-burning detective movies that don't pack a punch, and you might even watch them with the kids, then 'Murder by Numbers' is a good fit. There's no graphic violence here. Just a couple of dead bodies at the start, and even then, it's not entirely clear they're deceased. But that's often the case in European films – the brutality's described in dialogue or letters, not shown on screen. So, no need to lose any sleep over it.
My rating: 4 out of 5.
It's definitely worth a watch.
