I've been reading this magazine out of habit, but I'm not a regular buyer or subscriber. Amidst the hype, scandals, celebrity gossip, ads, and sensationalism, there's some useful information that actually draws me in – and that's mainly in the print version. I love being able to quickly scan the entire page and decide what catches my attention and what I can leave for later or skip altogether.
Personally, I've noticed that the magazine has been going downhill: either I've outgrown the 'communist' era vibe, or the publication has taken a weird turn trying to please everyone, but at the cost of quality information. The money talks, and it's affecting the content. Articles are now mostly filled with big, colorful, and attention-grabbing images – almost like American comics. It's no surprise, given our 'clip-thinking' era. If readers don't stop and focus on the images, they'll likely skip the text. Sometimes, the headlines are catchy, but the actual content doesn't live up to the hype.
I get that writers are paid by the word, and it's hard to deliver gems regularly, but there's a lot of filler in the articles. However, I do come across some interesting, useful, or important information occasionally. It's like finding a needle in a haystack.
The ads are a major concern. A lot of them raise red flags about the quality and authenticity of the products or services being promoted. As the saying goes:
The publisher is not responsible for the accuracy of the ad content.
So, be cautious, be discerning, and be careful when making a decision. Some people will fall for their empty promises, and that's a shame.
A simple example of an attempt to scam. Newspaper number: 33-t (27510-t) from August 16-23, 2023. There was an ad on the last page about a miracle cure. You call the number starting with 800, and after 1.5 minutes of conversation, the person answering the call says that they'll call you back (from a different number, of course!!!). Then, you receive a call from a number already marked as SCAMMERS in your contacts, meaning that they've previously tried to scam or string you along for money with some all-powerful pills for 100,000 rubles for the full course!
The incoming call can last up to half an hour, as it takes time to convince the client to make a purchase. But the potential client is put off by the price of 100 rubles for 3 months of treatment, and they hang up. However, the persistent salespeople sense that the target is close and make a follow-up call with an offer of 20,000 rubles for a weekly course. And, of course, shipping is free, courtesy of the company + a gift!!! The courier will deliver the questionable miracle drops in under 24 hours! Pay the money without leaving the checkout, as a character from a famous Soviet comedy once said.
If the person realizes they're being scammed or simply decides to cancel the order, even if the courier is already knocking on the door, they'll be met with an angry tirade and wishes for a deadly illness from the deal manager, who's dissatisfied with the wasted time.
Be aware!!! All phone calls are made from different numbers:
The courier, often a random dark horse with their own number,
The company manager calls the client from their own number, while the fat cat who sold the expensive ad is happy with the revenue, and the disappointed clients-readers are left with nothing.
What a reality check and crash course in economic literacy from the 'fat lady' of the Soviet era!
Look both ways to avoid losing your money!!!
In the end, out of the entire 48-page (or sheet, as the printers call it) issue, I only skimmed through two-thirds, barely glancing at the headings and photos. From the remaining third, I read two pages, and gave another two or three a quick scan for interesting or useful content. A few facts caught my eye, and I filed them away for future reference. The rest is probably going to be read by relatives in rotation, given away to someone, and then recycled or even used as kindling for the fireplace on my dacha...
Among the publication details, there are nearly a dozen sections and notes that are all printed on a commercial basis
which means someone's paying for it
So, don't take everything you read at face value: know that all the commercial content you see is paid for by someone with mercantile interests.
My impression of the newspaper over the past couple of years is 2+. I used to like it more. I wouldn't recommend it to friends!
But for those who don't get their information from other sources and end up holding the 'fat lady', be aware that you might encounter some scammers through the ads in this popular newspaper.
It's essential to be cautious and discerning when reading this newspaper.
