My Christmas Review #22. Just in time for the holiday season, DreamWorks has dropped a fantastic gift for fans of the Madagascar franchise - a short film featuring our beloved characters. If you or your kids somehow missed this one when it first came out, you absolutely need to check out A Christmas Madagascar now, don't wait. The storyline takes place after the first part. Runtime is 00:28:11.
_____________________________PLOT AND MY THOUGHTS ON THE PLOT_____________________________
Yet another attempt by the animals from the New York zoo to escape Madagascar has ended in disaster. And to make matters worse, something went so wrong that they accidentally knocked Santa's sleigh off course, and in the process, he hurt his head and forgot who he was!
“Hey, Santa, buddy, time to fly!
I don't want to fly. I want to stay and party!
Alex, Marty, Gloria, and Melman (with the help of the penguins) are going to have to deliver all the presents themselves. Meanwhile, Santa's going to be rocking the Christmas party at King Julian's place - despite all the presents, he's still pretty miserable.
“Look at Amelia smiling! It's great that she's happy. It's like something warm is moving inside her, like... like worms or something...”
Can the animals save Christmas and make it back to New York? Will King Julian find the holiday spirit and find joy in giving gifts? Check out A Christmas Madagascar to find out!
“It's not about getting, it's about giving.
Then go give!
I mean, it's tough to come up with an original Christmas story, considering how many of these short films are churned out like they're on a conveyor belt. I mean, just last year, Disney dropped Walt Disney's Preparing and Starting. So, even though the movie itself isn't bad, the theme is a bit overdone... But the writers did manage to bring some humor and good wordplay to the table.
– I have claustrophobia.
– Well, now it's going to be Santaclostraphobia!
_________________________MAIN ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES_________________________
By modern animation standards, Rise of the Guardians is pretty good quality: it's not a blockbuster, but it's not a total flop either. So, there aren't really any standout advantages or disadvantages – it's just a solid, no-frills effort.
When you're downloading the file, make sure to check the audio track info. The Russian dubbing has been done a few times, and some of the translations are pretty cringeworthy. Look for the 2009 version from NevaFilm, where you'll get the same voice actors as the feature films. That's a great dub and translation, if I do say so myself.
_______________WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM ALL OF THIS_______________
If you're judging Rise of the Guardians as a standalone film, it's unlikely to impress. If you're not a fan of the franchise or haven't seen any of the feature films, I wouldn't recommend watching this one. But if you have seen the feature films and enjoyed them, then this one won't disappoint either.
If you're a fan of Christmas shorts based on famous cartoons, you've got to check out Kung Fu Panda Christmas. And if you're in the mood for something classic, I highly recommend the British animated special The Snowman. _✩__________________________NOW IT'S TIME TO GET IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT! __________________________✩_
