Let's face it, you can't find authentic Azerbaijani potatoes or earthy tomatoes at a typical supermarket.
I've learned my lesson the hard way: never trust ads, but deep down, I always hope that this time will be different...
But alas, my experience was a repeat of the past – the rule still applies 100%! Trust me, I've learned this the hard way: never buy veggies that are packaged in a way that makes them hard to see.

I opened the package and was immediately struck by how gorgeous the tomato looked, with a fresh green stem.
Take a closer look: the label clearly states that they were made recently.

I'm seriously wondering: what's going on here? Are these, like, plastic tomatoes or something?
Salt that's been sitting in the ground for millions of years still has an expiration date!
Sugar has an expiration date, too – it's not like it's going to spoil anytime soon!
But these 'eternal' tomatoes? That's Nobel Prize-worthy (at the very least!)!
But that's not all! I pulled out the next tomato, and even on the photo, the white familiar fuzz is clearly visible!
I thought to myself, where's the source of the moldy smell?
And there it is, the source of the smell with an unlimited shelf life!
By the way, I have to say that the storage conditions in the store were top-notch, normal temperature, a bit cool.
Mold doesn't grow in such conditions!
So, two of the tomatoes ended up in the trash.
What else could I do?
Those who know their biology know that if mold appears, the entire product is contaminated and unfit for consumption – even TV shows about food quality mention this repeatedly.
But what about the third one? Maybe it'll be lucky?
We pulled it out.
Inspected it.
Yay! It's spotless, no defects!
I thought, I'll make a tasty salad with the tomato, onion, Adyghe cheese, potato, and fresh herbs, and drizzle it with classic vinaigrette dressing (the name comes from the French word for vinegar), made from vegetable oil, natural vinegar, salt, and pepper.
It's a real treat!
But that wasn't meant to be.
We slice the third tomato and see...
Tomato #3Again, I'm left wondering about the producer: where's the promised rich red color?
I'm not colorblind, but for some reason, I see something pretty pale with a white-yellow streak inside...
And how it looks in the ads is a whole different story!
But that's only half the problem.
In any product, taste and aroma are crucial!
On the packaging, it says in white on red:
with a stunning taste
Wow! We tried it.
The third question to the producer: where's what you promised?
It made me think of an episode from a TV show where a chef from an Italian restaurant said:
We order tomatoes from Italy because you guys in Russia don't have good...
I'll be honest, those red cherry tomatoes you find in supermarkets are a far cry from the real deal.
Tomatoes are actually considered the most acidic fruit among veggies, but don't get me wrong – I'm talking from a culinary perspective.
From a botanical standpoint, they're fruits, but we tend to think of them as veggies in the kitchen!
The store-bought ones just don't have that authentic tanginess, that true tomato flavor.
I mentioned earlier how much I love Azerbaijani heirlooms, and it's because they have that perfect balance of sweetness and acidity.
You can still find some decent ones at the market during the summer, like those from Krasnodar or Rostov, but it's a short window, and even then, it's mostly at the market.
Supermarkets are stocked with subpar produce year-round.
But these tomatoes were a total disappointment – I'd even say they were inedible!
The flavor was some weird, grassy taste, and don't even get me started on the acidity.
I mean, it was like eating a completely different fruit.
And the aroma? Non-existent.
I went to the market during the summer, picked up a few heirloom tomatoes, and the smell was incredible.
But these? Nothing. Zilch.
Needless to say, I won't be buying them again.
I'll just wait for the heat to die down and head to the market instead.
It's not worth the risk of getting subpar produce, especially when it comes to something as simple as a tomato.
There's a reason why people swear by their local farmers' markets – it's because they know they're getting the real deal.
So, to all the producers out there, I say: take a hard look at your packaging and your produce.
Make sure you're not misleading your customers with false promises.
Because when it comes to food, honesty is the best policy.
And to all the consumers out there, I say: be smart, be picky, and don't settle for subpar produce.
Take the time to research, to read reviews, and to find the best produce for your needs.
