I'm a huge fan of Stephen King's novels, and many of his enthusiasts consider 11/22/63 to be his magnum opus. I wanted to share my thoughts on reading this book.

I'm a big fan of Stephen King's book designs. This one's no exception. The cover features old newspaper clippings and the book title, which immediately piqued my interest.
The front cover features a photo of the author and a brief summary of the plot, which I found to be a nice touch.
The plot: The story follows Jake Epping, a high school teacher living in 2012. He's divorced and spends his days in a routine, which is until he receives an unexpected call from Al, the owner of Al's Diner.
The protagonist is shocked, as he's not close to the diner owner. But what really throws him off is Al's appearance and strange behavior. Al asks Jake to trust him and follow his instructions, which leads Jake to find himself in 1958. After recovering from the shock, he returns to the present and receives a mission from Al: he needs to spend five years in the past to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
Characters
Jake. He's your typical, unassuming hero, King-style. I've noticed that the author tends to write one-dimensional characters, which can be a bit frustrating at times. They're all pretty similar, with the same worldview and thought process. It feels like King is writing his characters from a middle-of-the-road American male perspective, or maybe just from himself.
Jake isn't exactly my favorite person. He's a bit rough around the edges and struggles to keep his mouth shut. I didn't like his thoughts on a lot of things, like how he tried to justify Lee Oswald. But he does have one redeeming quality that I have to mention: his loyalty. He's a great partner, and his relationship with Sadie deserves respect.
Sadie. She's a teacher from a bygone era, and Jake's girlfriend. Despite being from different times, the two of them managed to create a spark and a tender relationship. But it's not exactly a fair one, since Sadie doesn't know a lot about Jake's secrets. She's perceptive and a bit clumsy, which are her defining traits.
Lee Oswald. The alleged John F. Kennedy assassin. Jake spends a lot of time trying to understand what kind of person he is. Lee Oswald is a really unpleasant character. He's an aggressive fanatic who beats his wife. I just didn't feel any sympathy for him.
I've met a ton of other characters in the story that Jake has encountered over the five years he's been stuck in the past.
What I loved about the book:
The ambiance is one of the things that really stood out to me. This is King's bread and butter, and he's a master at crafting different moods. He does a great job of capturing the atmosphere of various cities. Castle Rock is dark and foreboding, Jody is quiet and peaceful, Dallas is just plain nasty, and so on.
Another thing I appreciated was the historical accuracy. The book does a great job of expanding our knowledge of the 1960s. There are a ton of real historical figures in the story.
I also found the book to be engaging to read. Despite the sometimes tedious descriptions, the book really draws you in. I read it for about three months, and it still held my interest.
King does a great job of building tension and keeping you on the edge of your seat. He's really good at dropping subtle clues that make you wonder what's going to happen next.
What I didn't love about the book:
One of the things that bothered me was the excessive detail. I've always appreciated the author's tendency to go into too much detail, but in this book, he took it to a whole new level. King named everything. Instead of writing: Jake walked left, stopped at a store, and bought a soda, the author writes: Jake walked left, down Cossa Street, saw a supermarket called Alenka, and bought a soda called Good.
It's also clear that you need a good understanding of history to fully appreciate the book. Before this book, I knew John F. Kennedy was an American president who was assassinated. That's it. But here, the author throws around a lot of names of politicians, historians, and other people I'd never heard of. Some of the explanations went over my head, as I'm not great with history and politics.
I also felt like the book focused too much on everyday life. I expected the book to be more dynamic. I thought Jake would be rallying supporters, coming up with creative ways to save the day, etc. But 80% of the book is just Jake living in another era. Some parts felt dragged out, and I needed more action.
Lastly, I didn't like that all of Jake's efforts were for nothing. I'm not a fan of those kinds of endings.
This is definitely the most polished book by King. It's clear he put a lot of effort into writing it. The author did a great job of capturing the details of the era and drew me in. The book has definitely become one of my favorites by King. However, it didn't surpass my all-time favorite King book – The Shining.
The Verdict. I really enjoyed the book and I'm glad I got to know it. But because of the flaws, I'm only giving it 4 stars and I'd still recommend it to everyone. Thanks for reading, everyone! ❤️
